A solid understanding of music theory is no mere academic exercise but a common language that will enable you to concisely communicate with other musicians, as well as express your musical ideas. An understanding of basic music theory will support you in all of your musical endeavours, eventually making the application of advanced topics much easier.
This course will take you through the fundamental building blocks of every music, that is rhythm, notation, terms, and analysis. You will go from identification of musical notes, through to rhythm, scales and notations, and then conclude with intervals and chord building. You will also go through advanced topics which include modes, chord scales and tensions, key circles, irregular time signature, as well as modal interchange and musical forms. As a bonus, there will be a focus on music writing using Sibelius and Muse score.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the note values, signs, symbols, and terminologies.
  • Identify musical notes, expand your knowledge of both Simple and compound time signatures, phrasing and grouping of notes, triplets and duplets, irregular times and different musical styles.
  • Understand the musical lines and spaces including ledger lines, the treble and Bass staff, the alto and tenor clefs, accidental and ornamental signs.
  • Expand your knowledge of scales, including Major, minor, chromatic scales and their constructions, Triads and chords, intervals and relative scales.
  • Music analysis- advanced topics cadence, key circle, musical forms, Open score, transposition.

Makinde James is a multitalented music educator, contemporary music pianist, skilled music producer, and a director for live performances. He has a deep passion for music theory and a knack for teaching, Makinde's goal is to help students develop techniques for learning to play songs on the piano by ear, without neglecting the much-needed theoretical knowledge.

He has several years of experience as a performer and educator, as a contemporary music pianist, he is well-versed in various genres of music which includes, jazz, classical, rock, and pop. This has enabled him to adapt to any style or genre of music while teaching his students. Alongside his skills as a pianist, Makinde is also a talented music producer and has an in-depth understanding of music production techniques, software and equipment. He currently is the Music producer and director for live performances at The Music Executives, where he oversees the entire production and ensures a seamless event.
